Hungry Ghost Festival 中元节(Zhong Yuan Jie) is a traditional festival that takes place during the lunar 7th month (for one month). During this period, the gates of hell open releasing all the spirit (including restless spirit, evil spirit, ancestors) to the earth in search for food/look for their family members/or to take revenge.
To Taoists and Buddhists, these evil spirits are not to be taken lightly. Hence, there are various practices associated with entertaining and appeasing these spirits. For instance, believers will burn joss sticks, joss paper known as Kim Zua, food offering to show appease the lost souls along the street, as well as praying to their ancestor to show filial piety. There will also be large-scale performances called getai which provide entertainment to both the spirits and the living.
